Please tell us a bit about your background. How did you get started in design?

Early in my career, I sold publishing and prepress equipment as a corporate sales rep for an Apple Computer Value-Added Reseller (VAR) to the advertising and printing markets. It was here that I built my knowledge of the design process by working closely with graphic designers, ad agency managers, editors, photographers, publishers and others in the creative field. Over time, I began to put into practice what I had learned.

How long have you been with your company?

I started Red Gremlin Design Studio in 1997.

Are you self taught or did you attend school for your industry?

I am completely self taught through over twenty years of being in marketing communications. I have spent time on both sides of the desk as the creative designer and the client. I spent many years in prepress and publishing consulting that gave me a solid base from which to learn the fundamentals of design and then molded my personal design skills on top of that base. My educational background is in marketing and I hold an MBA in Marketing from the University of Liverpool.

What web browser do you use?

I use Google Chrome

What is your favorite thing about the type of work you do?

I work on several projects at the same time because the creative process is not linear. This makes for a dynamic work environment were the variety of creative efforts are usually widespread...there is never a dull moment!

Who is your typical client at the moment and what types of projects are you working on?

Most of my clients are small or emerging businesses with many in the start-up phase. Having been an entrepreneur myself for over twenty years, I understand this phase of business very well.

What advice would you give a client in order to prepare for a new project?

I ask that the client have an idea of what they like and what they do not like. This simple step greatly reduces the process of focusing in on what appeals to them. I understand that it is up to the designer to capture the vision the client my has but if the client dislikes the color red, for example, it should be mentioned up front so that the designer stays away from that color and does not travel down the wrong path early on.

Do you use a CRM (Customer Relationship Manager) or any type of project management or proposal software?

Over the years, I have learned that an agreement is only as strong as the two parties involved. I guarantee my work. No client has ever paid for a job they were not completely satisfied with. I do not use contracts and project management software only serves to slow down the creative process because things rarely end up where anyone thought they would end up...that's part of the appeal of creativeness.

What is your standard hourly rate?

50

Do you have a minimum budget for a new client?

No, each project is different and unique. My goal is to meet the immediate needs of the client regardless of project complexity (or lack thereof). I build long-term relationships and my clients keep coming back because I give them great value and treat them well. Many small things I do for my clients as a courtesy, never charging them for every little task.
