Please tell us a bit about your background. How did you get started in design?

I grew up an artist always drawing. In 1989 an owner of a small design company was looking for a designer and told a friend of mine. They relayed the message to me and I was given the job. I worked there for over 4 years.

How long have you been with your company?

Over 20 years. I've been on my own ever since that first design job.

Are you self taught or did you attend school for your industry?

I attended design and art courses in San Jose, CA. However, a majority of my knowledge is self taught.

What web browser do you use?

Firefox, Safari, Chrome, IE mostly for testing

What social media do you use for work and play? Do you have a favorite?

What advice would you give to someone looking to get into the web design field?

Work for a design company for as long as you can. Take on projects as a freelancer on the side if they allow, and then once you are comfortable enough to hold your own... go for it!

What do you see as the most prominent emerging technology?

3D printers.... They will revolutionize how we look at future products. Some of the inventions that start popping out are going to be insane. It's a game changer.

Who is your typical client at the moment and what types of projects are you working on?

Small businesses, logo designs, a few websites, some SEO.

What advice would you give a client in order to prepare for a new project?

Have as much as your content ready as possible... pictures, copy, etc. It's makes the process so much faster.

What is the most common problem you deal with when working with new clients who do not have much experience with working with designers?

Their logos are usually low quality bitmaps, or their photos are from a smart phone.

Do you use a CRM (Customer Relationship Manager) or any type of project management or proposal software?

I use a time app on my phone to track my hours, and I use Excel to organize my clients and retainers.

Do you have a minimum budget for a new client?

No, I work with all budgets. I try to help a client get their business up and running as much as I can. I know what it's like to start a business on a "shoestring".
