I was studying fine art at San Jose State University in California and every so often businesses and potential clients would come into the art department to see students work. Someone liked one of the paintings I was working on [using airbrush] and asked me if I would be interested in doing some commercial illustration for their magazine. That was my very first professional assignment.

Both. I studied fine art and graphic design in 3 different colleges, but have learned most everything by good old hard work, practice and learning from peers.
I like Firefox and Safari. I have to regularly compare how websites behave in different browsers to ensure cross-browser compatibility for the designs.
Facebook for both work and play. Clients will often have me design their company Facebook landing page along with the website(s) I design for them. I like LinkedIn for researching professionals. I also like About.me for the creative freedom. Stumbleupon and Houzz are also great for inspiration.
No two projects are alike. I enjoy being a part of my clients' success.
Study traditional graphic design and art first. Even the most technologically advanced websites are junk without good use of design principals. Don't try and be a hero and be good at every aspect of web development, let specialists in different types of programming be a part of your team. Focus on what you are best at.
Again, I am a designer first and programmer second. I do like the combination of traditional HTML, php, jQuery and javascript. Mainly because these languages work seamlessly together and are incredibly flexible.
