The Center for Technology and Aging (CTA) awarded a combined total of $477,150 to five organizations in the form of one-year grants for implementing programs that exhibit the best ways to connect seniors living with chronic conditions to mHealth technologies.
One organization that received a grant was CalOptima. The funding was provided for CalOptina’s mHealth- and wireless-based program to delay or prevent the need for Medicare members with heart disease to move to more intensive care settings
The second group that received funding was the Family Services Agency of San Francisco, which utilizes cloud technology to access EHRs through a tablet. The Family Services Agency uses this as a method of providing assessment and care planning tools to improve health assessment, care coordination, and result evaluation for low-income, isolated seniors who need health monitoring.
Front Porch Center for Innovation and Wellbeing was also given a grant for its smartphone app designed to increase medication adherence within the independent senior population.
Another group that received funding was HealthInsight. This grant was awarded to HealthInsight for a program that utilizes SMS to improve education and care management for diabetes among older adults.
The final grant recipient was Sharp HealthCare Foundation. Sharp HealthCare Foundation was given funding to support its plans for remotely monitoring chronic obstructive pulmonary disease patients.
The CTA made its decisions based on the evidence and theory that applicants presented as the basis for their mHealth technologies, and the funding will come from the SCAN Foundation and Beacon Community Program, organizations aimed at elevating the standard of care for older adults and providing funding to groups that develop and display the potential of health IT respectively.
The CTA believes that the strength of mHealth within the senior care industry lies in its ability to reach out to seniors where ever they are and reduce their need to leave home to receive care. In this manner, the CTA emphasizes the role that the five grant recipients’ programs play in reducing the cost and time commitment for both healthcare providers and payers through innovative mHealth technologies.
