DQ News: Five Practical Steps To Optimizing Your Website To Rank In Google

Get Design Bids

Small business owners with a website can give themselves a better chance of seeing their website appear in Google search results with some basic on-page optimization of the pages and blog posts on their website.

By taking these steps, a business owner makes it easier for Google to interpret your page’s meaning and it will help you get found when people search using terms relevant to your page’s content.

Step 1

Set the TITLE tag of your page to a brief 3-4 words describing what your web page is about. Short, descriptive titles (that include your keyword) are easy for humans to recognize and they give Google the information it needs to identify your page.

Step 2

Use your target keyword in each of your header tags, h1, h2, and h3. Header tags reiterate to Google the meaning of your page. For humans, the header tags help to break up long sections of text, making it easier to read.

Step 3

Link from your page to another page (or pages) on your website. This provides a professional looking page and also helps keep your reader hooked as they “click through” to other pages on your site.

Step 4

Try to keep your keyword density around 1-2%. Anything more than that may appear like you are spamming the page with your keyword. Plus, it is likely that the page content will not read well if you are jamming keywords down the reader’s throat.

Step 5

You will need to know a little bit of HTML (unless your site is in WordPress) to carry out this step. Set the image “alt” tag for each of the photos on your web pages to be the same as your keyword. Google can’t read photos, so setting the “alt” tag allows you to briefly communicate what the image is.
