DQ News: Petition Drive for Ethical iPhone Manufacturing Planned for Thursday

A global protest and petition movement will take aim at Apple tomorrow, as an activist group will descend on numerous Apple retail stores around the world.

The goal? To deliver 250,000 “signatures of protest” demanding the “ethical” construction of future generations of Apple products, including the yet-to-be released iPhone 5.

The largest concentration of petitioners will stake out at Apple’s new Central Terminal store in New York City.

“I have been a lifelong Apple customer and was shocked to learn of the abusive working conditions in many of Apple’s supplier factories,” says petition organizer Mark Shields. “At Foxconn, one of Apple’s biggest manufacturers, there is a history of suicides, abusive working conditions, and almost no pay. These working conditions are appalling, especially for Apple.”

Following the latest round of criticisms that allege unsafe and abusive working conditions at Foxconn, Apple CEO Tim Cook reiterated that no such treatment of workers will be tolerated by his company.
