DQ News: mHealth: Hospital Targets Improved Medical Care with New Mobile Application

Proving once again that mobile has the potential to teach old dogs new tricks, St. Christopher’s Hospital for Children – an institution established in 1875 – is now on the cutting edge of mobile apps with its latest mHealth endeavor.

This week, St. Christopher’s Hospital for Children helped the mHealth industry take another significant step forward with an innovative new mobile application that’s poised to further connect the hospital to community members and increase access to health-related information.

The mobile app in question is free and powered by WorldLink. It’s available across numerous platforms, including Android and Apple’s complete slate of iDevices – the iPhone, iPad, and iTouch. The hospital plans to a BlackBerry compatible app “in the near future.”

The application is already garnering a substantial amount of positive feedback and generating talk of the promising likelihood that other medical facilities will similarly invest in such worthwhile mobile services and technologies.

“Every day, people look for ways to manage their health care. Mobile applications provide a convenient and easy way to access health-related information,” says Carolyn Jackson, chief executive officer at St. Christopher’s Hospital for Children. “We’re excited to offer this emerging technology to families in the greater Delaware Valley and look forward to adding more applications in the near future.”

The new app allows users to access:

• ER Wait Times
• Map and directions;
• Frequently-called hospital numbers;
• “My Data” section, which maintains a user list of allergies, emergency contacts, insurance information, medical history, physician contacts and medications;
• First Aid Guide;
• Health Library; and
• Physician Finder
