DQ News: Major News Items Make Twitter, Has Your Business Done Likewise?

Get Design Bids

TwitterThe killing of the world’s number one terrorist was indirectly caught on Twitter, while one of the NBA icons of the last 20 years announced his recent retirement on the social network.

So, if Osama bin Laden and Shaq could command a presence via this social media tool, don’t you think your business could gain some attention there too?

It was a month or so ago that Americans and countless others around the world learned initially through Twitter that bin Laden was under assault from Navy Seals at his Pakistani compound. A local in Abbottabad was tweeting during the early morning hours that he heard helicopters overhead and when discovering they weren’t Pakistani, knew something big was going down.

Less than two months later, one of the most dominating NBA players of his era decided to retire after 19 years in the league and four NBA crowns.

Shaquille O’Neal, who sports some 3.8 million Twitter followers, made the announcement through a link to a video message via Tout, an iPhone app allowing users to transmit short video updates.

Social Tool Important for Businesses

Along with the celebrities, politicians and others who have used Twitter to spread their messages, the social media tool can be very effective for businesses looking to promote their goods and services.

For those not actively using Twitter to promote their businesses and brand, keep in mind that it can instantly allow you to disperse your company’s info, product, and service.

Simple Twitter Instructions

It is important when using Twitter to follow some simple instructions:

  • Decide how to best use the site to promote both your company and its brand;
  • Get comfortable with the site so that it is easy to navigate when you dig in;
  • Take feedback from consumers (both current and potential ones), meaning listen to what they’re saying;
  • Have your employees tweet about things related to work;
  • Follow those Twitter individuals who are relevant to your company. While it may look good to have a large number of people you follow and likewise for followers, make the connections more personal than just following a ton of individuals blindly. Following employees and colleagues too;
  • Monitoring on a regular basis is important, especially since you can locate and interact with individuals tweeting about your business. Also utilize the “trending topics” section to see if something tied to your business is making the tweeting rounds;
  • Finally, promote others in hopes they will do likewise. Leave a reply when someone mentions your business in a tweet and retweet messages that are of interest to followers.

Businesses aren’t tied to social media in whether or not they’ll sink or swim, but being more social through Twitter and other like tools should bring some positive company news to the surface.
