DQ News: Digital messages left for individuals at specific, real-world locations

alttext

Location-based messaging services have appeared on our radar more than once in the past year — notably BlockChalk and Nixle — and recently we came across another compelling example. Dutch Repudo is a service that lets users leave digital messages for each other at specific locations in the real world.

To use Repudo, consumers need only have a smartphone with working internet connection and GPS. The free Repudo mobile app is already available for iPhone, Android and BlackBerry; Windows Phone 7 support is coming soon. With the app in hand, users can leave multimedia messages for each other at any location in the world. Those text, photo, video or audio messages — called “Repudos” — can be left for a specific individual or for a complete stranger to collect. Potential recipients also in possession of the app can then check for messages left exclusively for them in their “to pick up” folder, or they can use the map to view Repudos left for anyone. In order to collect a Repudo, users must simply visit the designated location. Once they’ve received the message, the sender is notified.

As we noted back when we covered BlockChalk, services like these offer at least as much potential for business use as they do for consumers, and sure enough, Repudo offers numerous packages for advertisers. Time to start reaching out to potential customers in a location-based way, wherever they are in the world?
